City to give away 2000 logs for firewood

The giveaway will create a more sustainable forestry operation

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids’ forestry division will host a log giveaway on November 4 and 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the City’s yard waste drop off site (2001 Butterworth St. SW). The giveaway is part of the Forestry division’s new Urban Wood Utilization Program aimed at reducing waste from City trees that have fallen or were removed due to damage and disease.

The logs are approximately eight feet in length, one foot in diameter, and require a truck or trailer to carry. City staff will be on site to assist in loading. There is no limit to the number of logs an individual can take. There are approximately 2,000 logs available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The wood is best suited for firewood. However, the City plans to create future programs for woodworkers and local businesses to purchase high-quality wood.

“Sustainability is one of the City’s core values, and the Urban Wood Utilization program is one way we can embrace that value,” Joe Sulak, the City’s parks superintendent, said. “By giving away the logs rather than contracting with a company to dispose of them we expect to save approximately $20,000 annually. We’re excited to expand this program to continue reducing forestry waste, saving taxpayer dollars, and serving the community and businesses.”

Pre-registration for a 30-minute timeslot is preferred. To learn more about the giveaway, sign up for a timeslot and see a map of the pickup route, click HERE.
