With more than a foot of snow forecasted, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor has declared a snow emergency for the city until Friday at 6 a.m.

On-street parking in downtown Lansing is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. but will be allowed the rest of the day, according to a release from the city. However, on-street parking in the rest of the city is prohibited, and residential streets must be clear of vehicles to allow for efficient plowing.

“We are going to get a lot of snow in in the next few days," Mayor Andy Schor said. "In order to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors, I have declared a snow emergency. People need to refrain from parking on our streets so that we can clear them properly. City employees are working hard to keep roads safe. We will do our best to keep main roads clear as the snow continues to fall and will get to our side streets as possible.”

According to the release, the city of Lansing will be plowing more than 440 miles of streets across the city. This is a task that involves the cooperation between city staff, supervisors and equipment operators. City trucks reportedly travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to clear the streets from a storm event.

Citizens have 24 hours after snow stops to clear their sidewalks. The report on Feb. 3 said that the Public Service Department will begin taking complaints and respond to reports of uncleared sidewalks on Friday.

“We expect main roads and our downtown streets and parking to be clear of snow by Thursday morning," Schor said. "This should help downtown businesses open and allow for people to park and visit and work downtown on Thursday. Our residential streets will be plowed as fast as crews can get to them. Residents should continue to refrain from parking on residential streets so that we can clear them quickly and properly. Our City employees, especially our snowplow drivers, are out there 24/7 working to keep streets safe and clear.”

Residents can stay up to date on plowing through the city website’s snow plow map and winter weather maintenance update.
