Signbeam

Grand Rapids Public Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.

On Thursday, August 22, Grand Rapids Public Schools will celebrate the final piece of structural steel being installed on the expansion of Southwest Community Campus (SWCC). Current 8th grade students at SWCC, who will be the first graduating class of 2024, will have the opportunity to sign the beam to commemorate the occasion. Southwest Community Campus, a Spanish-English dual immersion theme school, is a $20 million bond project slated to open in fall 2020 beginning with 9th grade and growing a grade each year to expand from a PK-8 to a PK-12 school.

Southwest Community Campus’s expansion is part of the Plaza Roosevelt – a 5.5 acre mixed use development including education, healthcare, affordable housing, and more. Partners include Habitat for Humanity of Kent County, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Dwelling Place, Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities, Ferris State University, Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, and Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association.
