County of Kent issued the following announcement on Aug 23.
Our thoughts are with the Kalamazoo community and the loved ones of Sgt. Ryan Proxmire of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office who is being honored during a memorial service this afternoon.
Sgt. Proxmire passed after a pursuit in the line of duty on August 15, making the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the West Michigan community.
We thank and commend all who serve to keep our communities strong, healthy and safe.
Reminder: Funeral information for public service in honor of Sgt. Ryan Proxmire
On Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 11:00 am (following the private family service), there will be a procession of emergency vehicles (police, fire and EMS only) that will escort Sgt. Proxmire and his family to Miller Auditorium for a 1:00 pm memorial service that is open to the community.
The community is encouraged to line the streets on the route of the funeral procession (Stadium Drive from 9th Street to Howard Street). This will show the community’s support to the Proxmire family and the women and men who protect our community.
Area businesses that fly an American flag, especially those along the route of the procession, are asked to lower the American flag to half-mast (pursuant to Governor Whitmer’s order) as this community mourns the loss of Sgt. Proxmire.
Miller Auditorium will open its doors at 11:30 am to begin seating attendees.
The public reporting direct to Miller Auditorium should be aware of traffic congestion on Stadium Drive and approach Western Michigan University’s campus from an alternate route, access by Oliver Street is recommended.
To facilitate the procession of emergency vehicles, the highway exit ramps on I-94 at 9th Street, and US-131 at Stadium Drive will be closed to ensure the safety of the motoring public and the emergency vehicles.
Please share this information and line our street in support of Sgt. Proxmire.
Thank you everyone for your support and love during this very difficult time.
