The KCHD is urging residents to take steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites through the following steps:
1. Avoid being outside during dusk.
2. Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET.
3. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
4. Apply DEET insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites.
5. Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outside.
6. Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
7. Avoid boggy or marshy areas.
Also, out of the abundance of caution, the State is encouraging local officials to consider postponing, rescheduling or cancelling outdoor activities occurring at or after dusk, particularly activities that involve children.
