City of East Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Sept. 29.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced yesterday that a deceased deer in Kent County was found to have Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). While no human cases have been identified in Kent County, community members are encouraged to understand and implement the attached advisory from the Kent County Health Department.
MDHHS and the Kent County Health Department are urging residents to take steps to protect themselves from EEE and West Nile Virus (WNV). The MDHHS is encouraging local officials in Kent County to consider postponing, rescheduling, or cancelling outdoor activities occurring at or after dusk, particularly activities that involve children.
In light of the MDHHS recommendation, all outdoor recreation sports and programs administered by the Parks & Recreation Department will conclude by DUSK each day until further notice. Parents and children are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves when active outdoors.
Game schedules are being reviewed to determine if earlier start times are necessary, so they conclude by dusk. Supervisors will be in communication with coaches and parents to inform them of schedule changes as soon as we have the information.
