City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Sep. 24.
The Grand Rapids City Commission this morning finalized the process for filling the city comptroller position recently vacated by Sara VanderWerff.
Those interested in being Grand Rapids’ next city comptroller may submit an application to the City Clerk beginning 9 a.m. Oct. 1 through 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Applications will be available in the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW, second floor, and HERE. The city comptroller oversees the City's accounting office, which is responsible for internal audits, payroll, accounts payable and accounting services.
The appointment process set by the City Commission is:
- Applicants must submit the completed application form, a biographical sketch and/or resume, one professional reference and two personal references.
- The City Clerk will review all valid applications to ensure eligibility. The City Commission then will review applications and determine the process for first-round interviews at its Nov. 12 meeting.
- A subcommittee of the City Commission or the full City Commission will review the candidates’ submissions during the week of Nov. 19. This process will be based on the number of applicants.
- The selected top candidates will be asked to participate in a 45-minute interview by the entire City Commission during its Dec. 3 public meeting.
- Residents and community stakeholders will be invited to provide feedback on the top candidates later that day during the Commission’s 7 p.m. meeting.
- The City Commission will discuss the top candidates and vote on the next city comptroller during its 7 p.m. meeting Dec. 17.
- The new city comptroller’s oath of office ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7.
A qualified applicant must be a city of Grand Rapids resident for at least six months before the date of appointment and must be a registered and qualified voter of the city at the time of appointment.
The annual salary for this part-time position, established by the Local Officers Compensation Commission, is $43,321. The benefits for this position, established by the City Commission, include health care coverage and an opportunity to participate in the City’s retirement system.
The person appointed by the City Commission to fill this position would be required to run in the August 2021 city elections to serve out the remainder of the term that expires Dec. 31, 2021.
