Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) voted against legislation to raise the federal minimum wage that the Congressional Budget Office said could eliminate as many as 3,700,000 jobs.
“Our economy is booming, wages are rising, and last month alone 224,000 jobs were created,” said Congressman Huizenga. “As a small business owner and a father of five, I am concerned this legislation will make it more difficult for younger workers to gain the necessary work experience to build their skill set, climb the ladder of opportunity, and achieve success. Washington should be encouraging young people to participate in the workforce, earn a paycheck, and generate economic opportunity. This legislation does the opposite.
“The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this misguided legislation could eliminate up to 3.7 million jobs and negatively impact the very people supporters claim the bill is designed to help. Instead of government mandates, Washington should focus on pro-growth policies that strengthen small business job creation and reduce regulatory barriers that hinder innovation, opportunity, and economic expansion.”
