Ferris State University announced on April 11 that its women’s softball team achieved a doubleheader sweep over Grand Valley State, marking head coach Jake Schumann’s 600th career coaching victory at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Michigan.
The achievement highlights both a significant milestone for Schumann and an important pair of wins for the Bulldogs within their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) season. The victories contribute to the team’s overall record and underscore its recent strong performance.
In the first game, Ferris State rallied from behind to secure a 6-5 win in eight innings. Molly Versluis delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Ella McDonald for the walk-off victory. Outfielder Emma Gillard contributed three hits and three runs batted in, including a home run. Ava Gardner added two hits and an RBI, while Jayden Marlatt recorded a double with an RBI. Pitcher Cecelia Bell earned her ninth win of the season by pitching all eight innings.
The second game saw another comeback as Ferris State overcame a deficit to win 7-5. Gillard hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and drove in four runs overall. Alexis Kozlowski had three hits and one RBI, Brenna George collected two hits with an RBI, and Gardner notched two extra-base hits with one run scored. Katie Shuboy picked up the win by pitching four and two-thirds innings while allowing only one earned run.
With these results, Ferris State improved its overall record to 23-16 and moved to 9-5 in conference play. The Bulldogs have now won five out of their last six games.
