Ferris State women’s golf finishes second in GLIAC Championship

Ferris State University’s women’s golf team finished as runners-up in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, narrowly losing to rival Grand Valley State at Augusta, Michigan. The two teams contested the title match, which saw Grand Valley State win three out of five head-to-head contests.

Ferris State’s Susie Gietl succeeded in her match by three strokes, while Kamryn Shannon’s contest ended in a tie after 18 holes. Grand Valley State secured their victory by winning two matches by a single stroke and another by two strokes.

On Saturday, Ferris State had advanced to the finals by defeating Wayne State via a tiebreaker in the semifinals. This came after finishing second to Grand Valley State in the stroke play portion held earlier in the championship.

During stroke play, Ferris State completed with a team total of 601, placing them behind Grand Valley State’s 578. The Bulldogs recorded scores of 298 and 303 across the two rounds. Wayne State and Davenport followed in third and fourth place, respectively, among the nine participating teams.

Individually, Lizzie Anderson secured runner-up honors in stroke play with a score of 146, shooting rounds of 74 and 72. Ashley Thomasma finished tied for fifth with a 149 total, and Kamryn Shannon was tied for eighth with a 152 total. Gietl and Kylie Walker finished 17th and 19th, respectively.

In the semifinal round, Ferris State marked victories through Gietl and Anderson, and Shannon’s match ended in a tie. The Bulldogs proceeded via a tiebreaker based on total strokes.

The GLIAC Championship was conducted at Stonehedge North Golf Course in Augusta, Michigan. The Ferris State women’s team is now expected to be selected for the NCAA Division II Tournament, with regional selections to be announced shortly.
