The Ferris State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams started their outdoor season over the weekend, sending athletes to compete at the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Cedarville YellowJacket Open in Ohio, according to a Mar. 29 announcement.
These early meets are important as they set the tone for the rest of the season and provide opportunities for student-athletes to achieve qualifying marks. Whitney Farrell led Ferris State’s women by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in Louisville with a time of 10:45.66, which is a provisional qualifying mark for NCAA Division II nationals. Other notable performances included Emily Plouff finishing third in the same event, Sadie Larson placing third in the 100 hurdles, and Lizzie Haines taking third place in the 400 hurdles.
On the men’s side at Louisville, Trevor Smith won the 200 meters while Lucas Sefferlein took first place in the 400 meters. The Bulldogs’ relay team of Josh Langeland, Chase Segaar, Luke Berney and Sefferlein finished second in their event. In Ohio at Cedarville’s meet, Jack Romel placed sixth in javelin while Hunter Richardson secured eighth place in shot put.
Ferris State Bulldogs Women’s Track and Field competes at varsity level within NCAA Division II as members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to its official website. The program is affiliated with Ferris State University and focuses on developing student-athletes through structured support and coaching as outlined on its website. Both women’s and men’s teams share a specialized coaching staff according to official information, which supports collaboration across events.
Recruiting efforts continue through an online questionnaire that provides prospective student-athletes with opportunities to join future squads according to program details.
The Bulldogs will return to competition on Friday, April 3 at Michigan State’s Spartan Invite.
