The Ferris State University tennis teams secured victories against Purdue Northwest in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matches held in Hammond, Indiana, on Friday. The FSU women’s team claimed a 5-2 victory, while the men’s team emerged victorious with a 4-3 scoreline.
“It was a great day for the Dawgs,” commented FSU head coach, Mark Doren. “The women took care of business and came away with a big win. Today was a total team win for the men from solid doubles play to a great fight in singles.”
The women’s team swept the doubles matches with Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Kennedy Dumas winning their match 6-2. Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso secured a 7-5 victory, and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer with Ayva Johnstone won 6-4.
In singles, Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer won her match in straight sets at one singles, as did Madi at two singles. Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Katherine Earnest posted wins at the four and six singles positions, respectively.
The men’s teams, ranked 29th and 30th nationally, played a competitive match. Ferris State’s top doubles team of Erik Kovacs and Kevin Kovacs earned a 6-3 victory. Felipe Iser and Alessandro Santangelo also won in the doubles, securing an early match point for FSU.
Kevin Kovacs achieved a three-set win in singles, with Jose Andres Perez Alarcon winning in straight sets at five singles. Adrian Catahan clinched the overall match victory with a three-set victory in six singles.
The FSU women’s team improved their season record to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC, while the men’s team advanced to a 10-6 record overall and a 4-1 mark in league competition. Both teams are set to face Roosevelt University on Saturday in Chicago for further conference play.
