The Ferris State University softball team began Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competition with two victories over Wayne State on March 22 at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Michigan.
The opening of conference play marks an important point in the season for the Bulldogs, who compete in both conference and non-conference games according to the official website. In their first home action of the year, Ferris State won 9-3 in game one and 8-1 in game two. The Bulldogs hit a total of six home runs across both games. In game one, Emma Herremans hit a two-run homer after Wayne State scored three runs early. Alexis Kozlowski and Emma Gillard also contributed home runs, with Gillard hitting two during the opener. Pitcher Katie Shuboy secured her seventh win by allowing three earned runs over seven innings.
Game two saw Ferris State score early and build momentum with five runs in the fourth inning. Emily Killion and Ava Gardner each hit home runs during that frame. Cecelia Bell pitched all seven innings for Ferris State, giving up only one run on five hits without issuing any walks.
Ferris State improved its overall record to 16-11 this season and has now won seven out of its last nine games. The team will next host Saginaw Valley State on March 24 for another league doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., as stated by Ferris State University’s athletics department.
