Ferris State softball sweeps final games of Florida spring break trip

The Ferris State University softball team finished its annual spring break trip to Florida with two wins on March 13, closing out the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne. The Bulldogs defeated Saint Anselm 7-0 and followed up with a 2-1 victory over Northern State from South Dakota.

These results mark the end of an eight-game stretch in Florida, where Ferris State posted a 5-3 record and won its last three contests. The team now holds a 14-11 overall record for the season.

In the first game against Saint Anselm, Ferris State recorded ten hits while holding their opponent to just three. Ava Gardner led the offense with three hits and two runs batted in, including two triples and a double. Ella McDonald, Alexi Kozlowski, and Breanna Blair each contributed two hits, with Kozlowski also driving in two runs. Pitcher Katie Shuboy earned her sixth win of the season by striking out seven batters and allowing only three hits in a shutout performance.

The second game saw Ferris State take an early lead against Northern State, scoring once in both the first and third innings. McDonald, Kozlowski, and Emma Gillard provided the team’s three hits. Gardner and Gillard each had one run batted in, while Kozlowski added a triple. Addison Gillard pitched three and two-thirds innings without allowing an earned run before Cecelia Bell closed out the game with three strikeouts over three and one-third scoreless innings.

The Ferris State Bulldogs women’s softball program takes part in conference and non-conference games during its season, according to the official website. The program also supports student-athletes as they balance academics with athletics while contributing to the university’s athletic tradition according to the official website. Competing at NCAA Division II level as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is central to their schedule according to the official website. Ferris State is scheduled to begin conference play at home on March 21 against Saginaw Valley State and on March 22 versus Wayne State at FSU Softball Field if weather allows.
