The Ferris State University women’s softball team earned two victories over Davenport on May 2 in Caledonia, completing a sweep in their last road games of the regular season.
These wins are important as they help Ferris State finish strong before returning home for their final matchups. The Bulldogs compete in both conference and non-conference games during the season, according to the official website.
In the first game, Ferris State overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to tie, then adding four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh for an 8-6 win. Both teams had ten hits. First baseman Alexis Kozlowski led with three hits and three runs batted in, while outfielder Ava Gardner drove in two runs. Second baseman Jadyn Joseph contributed two hits. Kozlowski, Joseph, and shortstop Jayden Marlatt all hit doubles; Kozlowski and Gardner also hit home runs. Ella McDonald and Emily Killion added RBIs for Ferris State. Pitcher Cecelia Bell threw five-and-a-third innings before Katie Shuboy finished with one-and-two-thirds scoreless innings to secure the win.
In game two, Ferris State scored four runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth on their way to a 12-2 victory that ended after six innings due to run rule. The Bulldogs collected eight hits compared to four from Davenport. Kozlowski had three RBIs on two hits; Gardner finished with four RBIs on two hits as well. Emma Gillard hit a home run while Marlatt and Molly Versluis each drove in a run. Shuboy pitched all five innings for Ferris State, allowing only two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs’ program supports student-athletes by helping them balance academics with athletics while contributing to university tradition according to the official website. The team competes at NCAA Division II level as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to its official site, operating from Big Rapids, Michigan as noted by school officials.
Ferris State will conclude its regular season at home against Purdue Northwest on May 3 at FSU Softball Field.
