GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids City Commission has unanimously approved and appointed Bing Siong Goei to fill the Third Ward Commissioner position left vacant by the resignation of Commissioner Nathaniel Moody. Goei, a 64-year Grand Rapids resident, is the first Asian American to serve on the Grand Rapids City Commission and is a small business entrepreneur and owner of two Grand Rapids businesses – Eastern Floral and the Goei Center.
Mayor Rosalynn Bliss expressed her gratitude to the Committee on Appointments for their work in the appointment process and congratulated Goei on his selection, stating her trust in his ability to represent the residents of the Third Ward effectively.
In his application for appointment, Commissioner Goei expressed his dedication to serving the residents of the Third Ward and his commitment to celebrating the accomplishments of all community members. He highlighted his involvement with various organizations focused on underserved communities and his desire to work towards reducing poverty in the Third Ward.
Commissioner Goei also emphasized his collaboration with organizations dedicated to meeting the needs of underrepresented populations in the city, noting his current board positions at Amplify GR and the West Michigan Asian American Association.
The appointment process for the new Third Ward commissioner began in January, culminating in the selection of Bing Goei from a pool of qualified candidates. Goei's appointment marks a significant milestone in the Grand Rapids City Commission, bringing diverse representation and a wealth of community experience to the position.
