Grand Rapids Sister Cities International (GRSCI) will be holding its annual gala on June 8, the first in two years.

"This event really showcases our welcoming city as demonstrated by the inclusive message of the Sister Cities mission," GRSCI President Leonardo Tombelli said in a recent City of Grand Rapids release. "We invite all Grand Rapidians to join us for this night of international fellowship as we celebrate our sixth Sister City partnership."

The release stated that Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, is the sixth of Grand Rapids' Sister Cities, with an event set to have Korean entertainment, appetizers and drinks in theme with other Grand Rapids’ Sister Cities.

“It also will provide a very special update from all Grand Rapids Sister Cities and GRSCI partners,” the release said. “George Aquino, vice president of AHC+Hospitality, serves as master of ceremonies.”

In 2021 GRSCI announced that Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, would be the latest sister city, a Facebook post said. A virtual ceremony was held at Studio Park, and officials from Gangnam-gu were zoomed and “broadcasted in the plaza.”

The other Grand Rapids Sister Cities are Omihachiman, Japan; Bielsko-Biała, Poland; Perugia, Italy; Ga District, Ghana; and Zapopan, Mexico;  the release said.

Tickets are $75 for the upcoming event, which will be held downtown at the J.W. Marriott Hotel. They can be purchased by visiting Eventbrite.

GRSCI is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to cultivate relationships with the city and its sister cities “by promoting understanding and mutual respect through exchanges in culture, art, education, and community and economic development,” the release said.
